I had the chance to attend a race this past Friday and Saturday at Milan Dragway. I have been going to drag races all around the country for the past fifty years, and can say I've not seen anything like this race, at a very nice facility. Just imagine a drag strip with grass, pick nick tables, real bathrooms, and trees.

Once a month they run a NO ET "special class" for the street racer's. Some of these cars run into the "mid seven second" quarter mile times. They turn off the time clocks, money gets exchanged on the hoods of the cars, and they run the cars, and turbo nitrous bikes in "heads up" grudge races. They let the racers and spectators into the starting area while the cars are making their runs. People were standing within five feet of the cars while they were doing burnouts! We are talking about hundreds of people in the starting area, you could not see the track from the staging lanes due to all the people on the starting line. I was told this was "a light turnout" this weekend.

The place was packed with families and kids for two days, and the racing went past midnight each day. Lots of racer "Smack Talk", but no one got out of hand. It was a blast. Reminded me of how drag racing was in the old days. Hard to believe they are able to put on events like this at a "fifty year old" NHRA track, in "bankrupt" Michigan, when we can't even keep our tracks open in the Western States.

By the way, I did not see one aircooled VW racer in two days.

Good to see drag racing is still "alive and booming" somewhere.

That is Grudge racing at it's best. That happens at tracks all up and down the East Coast and South East. I can't beleive they allow all those people in the burn out area.

We could not have this kind of race at Irwindale without the Police coming in Riot Gear, and the Police Helicopter showing up with it's night sun light.

There's an annual Bar-B-Que about 1/2 mile from the race track, and it usually ends up by a visit from the Police Helicopter, LOL.

Milan was also one of my favorite tracks. I really enjoyed covering the old Michigan Bug-Ins there, done by Bill Rathbun. But once that event fell out of grace with the track owners (long story), few VWs ever returned.

Hey folks long wanted to visit Detroit and Michigan in these two giants of industry even with childhood dreamed about this, to visit the homeland of eminem and to visit the races. I would like to stay there longer and rent a house is not very expensive. Recently read an article on this site travelsafe-abroad.com about prices in different cities tourist situation and security, and I would like to know how reliable such sources are and to know what to expect.
