I just bought A 1956 oval Baja bug basket case. Only problem is nothing is original, I know a 1956 had 4 wheel drum brakes. So can anyone tell me what year front suspension this? Is it oem or aftermarket? Any help is welcome!
The front suspension on you 56 is from a much later model. In 1956 the torsion bar tubes were round. This one is composed of stamped halves welded together. In 56 the part the disc is attached to did not have ball joints like this. The disc could be an original equipment disc since German or European VWs came with disc brakes in the 1960s. The stamped metal front suspension like yours was also used in Type 2 and Type 3 models. Some of the Type 4 also had this front suspension.
There are some books available to help restore the cars. Get one. Look on Amazon or maybe TheSamba. Check here too.

Here is a picture of a 1956 front suspension from a restoration update I found online. This happens to have disc brake conversion but it appears the king pins have been retained. Note that the torsion bar tubes are round.
