The state of California has taken a hard line against illegal street racing, the type of which has on occasion led to the death of innocent pedestrians and the racers themselves. They're employing a new deterrent to make these illegal racers think twice about competing on public roads – crushing the impounded cars of those caught street racing. This Fox News video clip (click this link to view) shows a local reporter present at the inaugural crush who appears a little too excited about the event compared to the disembodied anchorman whose voice over we hear in the background. The tuned Honda Civic hatch is flattened quickly inside the crusher's jaws, the extreme pressure popping out its windows like eyeballs and some of the hatch's contents ejecting out the back like vomit. Fortunately, it looks like the after market rims may have survived.
The Ron Burgundy wannabe behind the desk says it best at the end exclaiming, "Half the guys in the studio are crying at what you just showed us."

I agree with the guy in the studio--- seems a MUCH better use of resources to confiscate the car, then part it out and sell it off. Maybe they think others will buy the stuff and go racing themselves? Who knows-- but the bottom line is, no matter what, the parts will be available to anyone who wants to street-race, theres no stopping it. I'd like to see them use the money raised from these cars to do something good rather than just cruch and destroy something with value.

I don't believe crushing the car will do anything different as a deterrent. Impounding a car and not giving it back is the key, do you think the owner much cares what they do to it after its been taken from him? I wouldn't. The deterrent is losing the car, not what they do with it afterward. They need to stiffen the penalties on the DRIVERS who participate. Fines, confiscation of the vehicle, jail time, 5 year loss of driving privledges, whatever it takes. Maybe red-hot pokers in the eyes or garden shears to the pinky fingers.

Good question. "Why not just part out the cars?". Crushing cars caught for illegal street racing is a much better idea because it gets the point across a little more. I believe impounding them is only a slap on the hand. Now, I cant imagine being any of those people who have to watch their cars being crushed. We've all street raced before, except Brian ;), so we know how stupid it is. Maybe not back in the day where there were more less-busy roads but certainly not ok. Good thing I go to the track,.....mostly. :-[
California has been up to this for quite some time.

There trying to figure out ways to get rid of the older cars, period. Somg checking is another way. The latest thing there kicking around is much like Europe and Japan, after a certin age you can not use it on the highways.

And guys like Danimal supports and votes for these efforts!

So supporting him helps the effort to rid the streets of the cars we all love and the reason your on this website
Who VOTED for this law???? That is the problem anymore....

I don't have a problem with some of these law but, the extreme of crushing the car is out of control... HOw many kids are out there racing the car that there parents paid for or still are paying for??? That puts more that just the racer in a bind... It gets the parents, banks, and insurance involved.... I think this law is BULL$h!7.... If they are going to do this then they need to make sure that there is somewhere withing driv'n distance to take your car to race.....

I am two hours in three directions from any drag strip... It is easy to understand why kids are on the streets instead of at the track.... This is not an excuse for street racing, but it "IS" a reason....

I am not going to speak for Dan, but most of these laws are drafted, thought of, brought forth, come from the Dems, and Reps too vote for some of these laws. They do not want to have fingers pointed at them, so they go along with this BS. Same as the ongoing debacle of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, stock market, banks, savings & loan, the rules were relaxed to get deadbeats into housing with no good credit history, no downpayment. USA had a good model of past history with loaning money to home buyers, but the Dem's going back to Carter, Clinton, Obama want to "change" the model. Some Reps like Bush, McCain had problems with this but only talked, no action other than talk.

We need a third party, only to shake up the entrench, get competition in DC, throw the bums out.

PS, just keep my bum

I'm putting my ass out on the line by saying this, but it seems easy enough to avoid; don't want to lose your car, don't street race, simple as that.
