Just joined. I have a '72 Super Beetle that came from Germany in 2015 after a 39 year sleep in covered storage some where in Bavaria. It has many original items like a Fulda bias ply spare tire, OEM ATE front disc brakes. Car is virtually rust free. The only rust I have found was under the sound proof material on the floors. The rust was in the low spots in the floor panels mainly in the rear foot wells. Paint is L54D, Marina Blue with Lapis Blue cloth seating upholstery. The seat side panels are dark blue Naugahyde. The official name of the blue vinyl is Lapis Blue. I am finishing the rust removal from the floors, repainting, and covering with new sound proofing. I don't know about restoring it since it has the equivalent of @33,000 miles on the original odometer. Speedometer and odometer are in kilometers and kilometers per hour. Speedometer body has a manufacturing date of May 1972 and that corresponds with the date the car was built in Germany.The car has the original paint. The only rust issue I found is at the inner bottom of the door skin. Probably due to no coating on the inner door at that location. VW claimed that the body was dipped to prime all the hidden locations. The entire area above the transmission was barely coated with anything and that is a very easily accessed location. If the body was dipped in paint then it might have been water based and it simply washed off.
The car was deliberately put into storage in 1974 and came out of storage around 2013. I came to Florida in 2015 by way of any American serviceman..
I am making plans to convert the engine to fuel injection using the Ford EEC-IV system as used on the Ford Escort with the 1.9L inline 4 cylinder engine. This engine in 1992 was provided with MAF and SEFI. The only thing I am up against in the firing order for the Ford is different than the VW and it is built into the computer. So I need to determine a work around.
