Straight Cut Gears - who makes the loudest?

10619 Views 33 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  COR
Love the whine of gear drive.

Have heard cars with gears you can barely hear.

And others that are just screaming, thats the ones I want!!

Who makes the loudest steel to steel gear set out there?

Or how do you set up a set to run loud if thats possible?

Thanks

Don't know of who makes the loudest but you got it right the steel on steel would be your best choice. unfortunately you can't set them up like a V8 maybe some one knows of a manufacterer that cuts them with more clearances.

Chevy springs and light oil and youll hear em..... I have the same set of magnums in my racecar that ive ran forever. They sing pretty well. I had a set of CB's in my ragtop that were pretty loud as well. Steel on steel for both sets.....
The set in the "SloVal" car were perfect!!

I "heard" the sloval set were over sized units from BERG. Dunno if they still make em or not. BUT they would destroy his cam bearings and he had the motor apart frequently from what I was told. He musta REALLY loved em a lot to replace the cam bearings that much....
Jeff makes a very good point. I myself don't want to take a motor apart any more times than I have to. Russ must have a spool in that thing or something to have to move the car that much!

They are Magnums. As for maintainance, Russ is your typical customer. He does not take care it, beats the **** out of it and out of all the years he's owned the Sloval we have only gone through the engine once.

Typical customer - Doesn't take care of it LOL!! :D Good for business I would guess if they keep doing that LOL

Anything special about those Magnums to make them loader? Or out of the box like that?

I want to have my set LOUD!
Its more then just a set of straight cuts. An engine block is a mass production piece with tolerances. Thats one of the reasons VW made factory cams with plus or minus gears.
Russ's block was probably built on May 4th. The day before the big party so it was rushed out. ;)

Gotcha !

Need to machine my case for the tolerances for loud gears. Would that be "tighter" tolerences I assume?

Is that correct
I had a set of magnums with heavy springs that use to sing like a bird.... I waisted them and a set of bugpack roller rockers a couple of years a go.... Too bad.....

Gotta love a fro wig!!

Baker's visor rocks it better though
I had a set of Magnum steel gears that were very loud with heavy springs, I put those same gears in a stock engine with a 110 cam and single springs and you could hardly hear them. I think that heavy springs makes the gears louder.
I have never herd any as load as the Sloval ones! My buddy Ben's gears sound close to it, but no cigar, his are loud because he used mismatched gears so the mesh probably wasnt a good match, probably not a good thing, but there loud.
can any adjustment or maching be done to make them louder
geez im hearing a bunch of ricers... who wants a whistle tip for their exhaust next?

So why post?

I put straight cuts in my timid lil 1776, but partially because I plan on upgrading the engine down the road and also because I love the sound of them. I could give two shits what anyone else thinks about my mild engine and straight cuts, but I dig the sound. Not everybody has cubic dollars for a monster engine that necessarily NEEDS them. In my case, I bought them with the anticipation of needing them down the road, but in the meantime I'll enjoy 'em just the same.
